Nellaiyappar Temple

Nellaiyappar Temple
Swamy Nellaiapper - Kanthimathi Temple

This temple is situated in the heart of the city. This is a twin temple dedicated to Siva and Parvathi. Rare jewels the Golden lily tank, Musical pillars, the hall of thousand pillars and abundance of sculptures in stone and in mortar are worth seeing This is one of the big temples in Pandiya Naadu measuring 756 feet by 850 feet, bigger than even Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.

This temple is a complex of two huge temples, one for Lord Nellaiappar and the other one for Kanthimathi Ammai, located side by side linked by the Mani mandapam. This temple was a stone structure in 8th Century itself The beautiful statue of Lord Arumugar (Muruga) with His 2 consorts Valli and Deivaanai sitting on His mount Peacock in the western prakaram is beautifully carved from a single block of stone.

A gorgeous garden, established in 1756 CE by Thiruvengadakrishna Mudaliar, next to the chain mandapam, welcomes visitors with full of flowers in beautiful colours. A square vasantha mandapam with hundred pillars is located at the centre of the garden. The 1000 pillar mandapam inside the Amman temple is very famous and it is here the celestial wedding of Kanthimathi Ammai with Nellaiappar takes place every year.
Unseen jewels, the Golden Lily Tank, Musical Pillars, the hall of a 1000 Pillars are gift for our eyes.
Musical Pillars:The Nada Mani mandapam has two huge pillars carved out of a single stone. Each giant pillar has a cluster of as many as 48 small pillars which produce musical sounds when tapped gently. The fact that a single piece of rock can produce different musical keynotes stands as a testimony to the unique understanding of the “physics and mathematics of sound” by our forefathers. In all, there are 161 such small pillars that make music in the Nada Mani Mandapam. In the South Tamilnadu, though there are
several temples boast of such pillars, like those at Azhavar Thirunagari, Tenkasi, Kalakaadu, Kuttralam, Shenbagarama Nallur, Suseendaram, Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai, the pillars of Tirunelveli stand out.
“This is an architectural rarity and a sublime beauty to be cherished and preserved”
